We had another busy day planned for day 10 of our cross-country road trip. Our goal was to reach St. Mary Campground in Glacier National Park, but first up was a tour of Lewis and Clark Caverns.
We’d spent the night camping in the state park campgrounds, so we were up and ready for the first tour of the day. We’d really enjoyed our tour of Wind Cave in South Dakota, so we were excited to see another cave on our journey. Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park is a giant limestone cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites, and it was a completely different experience!
We really enjoyed the tour, and it was a fun stop between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. We still had a long way to drive, so we set off across Montana after the tour finished. We made it to Glacier National Park in early evening and loved the drive through the park on Going-to-the-Sun Road!
It’s pretty incredible to imagine this road being built into the side of the mountain. There were many bridges like this one that I can’t imagine being the one laying the stones!
The road is extremely narrow in many spots, with the rock wall on one side and a large drop-off on the other. J seemed to enjoy driving though!
We saw our first mountain goat as we reached Logan Pass!
I loved all the waterfalls right next to the road.
We stopped briefly at Logan Pass even though the Visitor’s Center was closed for the night. There were several bighorn sheep in the parking lot! We were excited to see them up close, but it’s actually getting to be a big problem in this area that the wildlife are getting so used to people that they aren’t afraid to walk right up. A park ranger had to chase them back into the fields nearby.
Here’s where crossed the Continental Divide! I think we’d actually crossed it several times by this point, but Logan Pass was our first opportunity to take a picture with a sign.
The park looked so different on the other side of the Pass – lots of red rocks!
We camped for the night at St. Mary Campground and enjoyed another beautiful sunset.
