On Day 4 we woke up early, ready to head to Grand Teton National Park! This was one of the places I was most excited for on our trip, so I couldn’t wait to get there. We were planning on camping for four nights in order to have time to really enjoy the park!
None of the campgrounds in the park take reservations, so it’s all first-come, first-served. We were hoping to get a campsite at Signal Mountain Campground because it’s pretty centrally located, but this meant we needed to get there early to grab a spot. I’d picked a hotel in Dubois, Wyoming to stay in the night before so that we’d only have about an hour drive to the campground.
We were in luck and there were still a couple campsites left when we arrived, so we quickly set up our tent and then headed back out to drive the Loop Road through the park. It’s 42 mile scenic drive with tons of places to pull off and take pictures. It was a great way to get a feel for the park and where everything was. Plus it was gorgeous!!
Jenny Lake is beautiful!
Our first herd of bison!
This was one of our favorite views, from Oxbow Bend.
And here’s the view of Grand Teton over Jackson Lake.
After driving the Loop, we headed back to camp and took a nap. We really needed it after a long three days of driving! We woke up in the late afternoon and decided to head over to Two Ocean Lake for our first hike. I misread the guidebook (sorry J!), and it ended up being about 8 miles total around the lake and up to the Grand Viewpoint. It was almost entirely flat around the lake, with a pretty steep mile up to the viewpoint (but when it’s called the Grand Viewpoint, you’ve gotta go, right?)
Here’s a look back at Two Ocean Lake from the top of the Viewpoint.
And the view of the Tetons.
We were pretty excited to finally get to do some hiking!
We made it back to Oxbow Bend just in time to catch the sunset.
Then headed back to our campsite to cook some dinner! It was a pretty great first day in the Tetons! We had a longer hike through Cascade Canyon planned for the next day, so check back tomorrow to read more!
